The Son-Rise Program®

The Son-Rise Program® at The Autism Treatment Center of America™

First Developed:

1974 - Innovated by Barry Neil Kaufman and Samahria Lyte Kaufman, first in a successful program they created for their own son, then in an in-depth training model and program for children worldwide.

Overall philosophy:

The Son-Rise Program® created an educational treatment modality that included joining children instead of going against them. The program places parents as key teachers, therapists and directors of their own programs based in the home. The Son-Rise Program® believes that respect and deep caring would be the most important factor impacting a child's motivation to learn, and from the beginning has made love and acceptance a meaningful part of every teaching process. Once rapport has been established, teaching techniques are used to help the child develop.
The Son-Rise Program® helps build a relationship between you (the parent) and your autistic child.
The program teaches to:
- Establish a warm, interactive rapport with your child.
- Implement effective educational techniques.
- Enable your child to move beyond repetitive “stimming” behaviors.
- Move through challenging behaviors (such as tantrums or hitting).
- Become a confident teacher and advocate for your child.
- Motivate your child to learn–and to enjoy learning.
- Optimize your child's learning environment.
- Jump-start speech and language development.
- Relax and have fun–without giving up what you want for yourself and your child.
- Recruit and train a team of volunteers and helpers.
- Find a sense of peace and comfort with your child's present challenges.
- Create and sustain an attitude of hope and optimism about your child's future.

Popularity:

Approximate number of children on the autistic spectrum that participated in this treatment in 2004: 350
Approximate number of children on the autistic spectrum that participated in this treatment from 2000 to 2004 (the past five years): 1500
Approximate number of children on the autistic spectrum that participated in this treatment from 1995 to 2004 (the past ten years): 2500

Time required to do the treatment:

The recommended number of hours for a home-based Son-Rise Program is determined by the child's individual level of challenge and the family's current situation.

Treatment cost:

$1,995 for the Son-Rise Start-Up, a five-day training program that delivers comprehensive instruction in the core fundamentals of The Son-Rise Program®. Scholarships are based on a family's current financial situation.

Who directs the treatment?

The child's parents.

Where does the treatment take place?

The initial training program, The Son-Rise Program® Start-Up, takes place at The Autism Treatment Center of America™ in Sheffield, Mass., as well as one international location each year. Parents then work with their children in their home.

Training materials available:

Many books and audiotapes, as well as the Son-Rise Program Start-Up Manual (manual given during Start-Up Program)

Biggest success story:

Raun Kaufman, for whom The Son-Rise Program® was created, was diagnosed as severely autistic, and spent most of his time at age two spinning plates, and then went on to become a completely typical young man who later graduated from an Ivy League university. Raun now works directly with Son-Rise Program® families.

    Treatment Benefits:

I have been a son rise volunteer for 1 1/2 years. Son rise is not only a really respectful, organic and natural approach to help you child, it also teaches you a whole new life philosophy and positive attitude. It has been an amazing journey to see how loving and accepting someone unconditionally can actually act as a platform to build a relationship off. The boy i worked with had reached out so much - when i first started he used to bounce on balls, flap his arms and stare at walls for 50% of the time. Now, he loves making people laugh, he has great eye contact and loves interacting with people. It's awesome.

    Treatment Shortcomings:

I know a lot of people worry about costs - this does not have to be an issue if you don't want it to be. Many families i know earn all their money from fundraising ,and many LEA's fund programs now. The caudwell charity also funds most of the start up costs too.

    Overall Conclusions:

    Go for it :)

    Treatment Benefits:

We have been running our Son-Rise program for 4 years. It's been an amazing journey. Our son's progress is truly miraculous. He is interactive, happy, funny, mischievous, a really great little guy. Four years ago he was babbling to himself, running around in circles, talking to his hands. Not only has it been a good fit for him it has helped us. It has given us hope and tools on how to navigate this journey. We are now in control of our happiness and live with an awareness of the options we have. Autism does not have to be a life sentence. I truly believe this and the Son-Rise program has empowered us to live this out.

    Treatment Benefits:

I only have benefits involved with my experience in SonRise. I am a volunteer who has worked with a beautiful seven year old girl named Sydney for the last year. I have witnessed her break down walls and find her voice first hand. One year ago when I entered the program Sydney had only repeated 25 words in the six years of her life. After much love, motivation, and a nonjudgemental attitde Sydney is up to 138 words. She is giving hugs, laughing, playing, and interacting. I strongly suggest that anyone interested in Son-Rise please call the Autism Treatment Center of America. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!!!! : )

    Treatment Benefits:

The Son-rise program continues to be an incredibly powerful method of reaching our daughter and maintaining our own sanity. It is a beautiful program that not only allowed us to help our daughter move forward in speech, academics, physical skills and social skills, but also allowed us to appreciate her gifts and her able ways of coping. It taught us a new life view that has been benficial on so many levels, both in and out of the therapy room. This is a truly life chaning program. Our daughter went from a reclusive, non-verbal, stimming child at age four when we started the program, to an engaged, lively, talkative and physically talented little girl. We are overwhelming thankful that this program came to our atention through a dear friend whose success with the program was no less astounding. The therapists we both employed in our programs have become family friends and added so much to the life of our children and each member of our family.

    Treatment Benefits:

We have been running a Son-rise programme for our son Liam, now 5 years for 2.5 years. In this time he has changed from being a mainly non verbal sensory challenged child with no interest in other people to being a highly verbal, connected child with a great curiosity about people and places. The programme stripped away our despair and anger and focussed us on the achievements that we were all capable of. It was not only a feel good therapy: a lot of work has gone on and there is a so much skill in being good in the playroom, but Son-Rise enables us to navigate in a direction that Liam is comfortable with and everything he has achieved has come about as a natural progression from where he is, so the changes have been lasting.
